CONTEMPORARY ART
. ART
CONTEMPORAIN.
Contemporary Art. What is Contemporary Art? Nowadays, in the twenty-first century, contemporary art exhibits sometimes mislead us. When we enter one of these huge art fairs (not all of them, obviously), we enter with the preconceived notion that we will there view the most daring vanguard works of art, the most hermetic and innovative art. But that is not what Contemporary Art is. We have universally equated “contemporary” with “vanguard”. In actuality, Contemporary Art, Contemporary Painting, Contemporary Music, etc. only refers to that which is created in our times, parallel to us, like the etymology of the word indicates. Therefore, Goya’s dark paintings, as transgressing as they are, as innovative as the may be, they are not Contemporary Art. On the other hand, a nude by Lucian Freud is art of today, contemporary art with no doubt. And so is any other humble painting as minimalist as it may be, as innocent as it may be. Let’s not make the mistake of excluding from this beautiful title of “ Contemporary Art” any art that doesn’t follow the vanguard cannons. We need to remember that as innovative as Goya was, he is now a classic, and so is Picasso, and they are not contemporary artists. Let’s pay attention to everything that gets painted, written, composed, photographed TODAY, NOW, as a reflection of our times, of our era. Let’s leave our prejudices behind. In art, there are no advantages or rights provided by the dates.
